Nagykövet is the title used in Hungary for the highest-ranking diplomat who represents a country in a foreign state or at an international organization. The nagykövet serves as the head of the country’s diplomatic mission, typically an embassy, and may also be a permanent representative to an international body.

Appointments and rank are governed by national law and international practice. A nagykövet is appointed by the head of state on the government’s recommendation and usually holds the rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary. They present credentials to the host country’s head of state and assume duties after formal acceptance. The term of office varies by country and agreement.
