Mészklerakódás is a Hungarian term referring to the process of limescale buildup. This phenomenon occurs when dissolved minerals, primarily calcium carbonate, precipitate out of water and deposit onto surfaces. Hard water, which is rich in dissolved minerals, is a common cause of mészklerakódás.

The accumulation of limescale is often observed in areas where water is heated, such as in kettles, coffee makers, water heaters, and on the surfaces of taps and showerheads. Over time, this buildup can lead to a reduction in the efficiency of appliances, as the insulating layer of limescale hinders heat transfer. It can also cause blockages in pipes and reduce water flow. Aesthetically, mészklerakódás results in unsightly white or chalky deposits.

Removing mészklerakódás typically involves using acidic solutions, which react with and dissolve the calcium carbonate. Common household remedies include vinegar or citric acid.
