Myötölujuuteen, often translated as yield strength, is a fundamental material property in engineering and physics. It represents the stress a material can withstand before it begins to deform plastically. Plastic deformation means that the material will not return to its original shape once the stress is removed, unlike elastic deformation.

When a material is subjected to a load, it initially experiences elastic deformation. In this phase, the material deforms proportionally to the applied stress, and its shape is restored upon unloading. However, as the stress increases, it eventually reaches the yield strength. At this point, the material's internal structure begins to change, and it starts to deform permanently.

The yield strength is a critical parameter for designing structures and components, as it helps engineers determine the maximum load a material can bear without permanent damage. Exceeding the yield strength can lead to significant structural integrity issues, including bending, buckling, or even failure. Different materials have vastly different yield strengths; for example, rubber has a very low yield strength, while hardened steel has a very high yield strength.

In practical applications, the yield strength is often determined through tensile testing. A sample of the material is pulled until it breaks, and the stress at which permanent deformation begins is recorded. This value is then used to ensure that engineering designs operate well within the elastic limit of the chosen materials, providing a safety margin against unexpected loads or stresses.
