Muutumisvaiheet, often translated as metamorphosis, refers to the biological process by which an animal physically develops after birth or hatching, involving a conspicuous and relatively abrupt change in the animal's body structure through cell growth and differentiation. This transformation is common in insects, amphibians, and some fish, although the specifics vary significantly between these groups.

In insects, metamorphosis is broadly categorized into complete and incomplete forms. Complete metamorphosis, seen in butterflies, beetles, and flies, involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is primarily focused on feeding and growth, followed by a pupal stage where dramatic internal reorganization occurs, leading to the emergence of the winged adult. Incomplete metamorphosis, found in grasshoppers and dragonflies, involves a gradual change through several nymphal instars, with each molt bringing the organism closer to the adult form. Nymphs typically resemble smaller versions of the adult and share similar habitats and food sources.

Amphibians, such as frogs and salamanders, also undergo a remarkable metamorphosis. Typically, they hatch as aquatic larvae with gills, a tail, and often external gills. During metamorphosis, they lose their gills, develop lungs, grow limbs, and the tail may be reabsorbed. This transition allows them to move from a fully aquatic existence to a semi-aquatic or terrestrial life. The process is usually triggered by hormonal changes.
