Muurankers, Dutch for wall anchors, are fasteners designed to secure objects to masonry walls, including concrete, brick, and stone. They transfer load from a fixture into the wall by gripping, expanding, or bonding inside a drilled hole. They are used when wall studs are not available or accessible and are essential for permanent mounting in many buildings and installations.

There are several families of muurankers. Mechanical anchors expand or grip as the screw is tightened, examples include expansion/wedge anchors and sleeve anchors. Chemical anchors bond a borehole with an epoxy or resin before inserting a threaded stud or screw. For hollow masonry, different devices such as hollow-wall anchors or toggle-type fixes are used. The choice depends on substrate type, load, and environmental exposure. Common materials are steel (often zinc-plated), stainless steel for corrosion resistance, brass, or high-strength nylon for light loads.

Installation requires selecting the correct anchor type and size, drilling an appropriately sized hole, cleaning out dust, inserting the anchor, and tightening to the manufacturer's torque. Some anchors require curing time for the adhesive, while others immediately grip when the screw is tightened. Load ratings depend on substrate condition, hole cleanliness, and edge distance; overloading or drilling too close to edges can cause failure. In damp or corrosive environments, corrosion-resistant variants are advised.

Applications include mounting shelves, cabinets, handrails, electrical boxes, fixture mounts, and seasonal equipment. For heavy or dynamic loads, consulting installation guidelines or a professional is recommended.
