Muskelvolum, or muscle volume, refers to the three‑dimensional size of skeletal muscle tissue. It can be reported for individual muscles, a limb, or the entire musculoskeletal system, using units such as cubic centimeters or liters. Muscle volume provides a sense of how much muscular tissue is present, complementing other measures of muscle size and composition.

Measuring muscle volume typically requires imaging techniques. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are considered gold standards for precise volumetric estimates. Ultrasound can estimate volume in some contexts, often by combining measurements from multiple cross‑sections. DEXA and bioimpedance summaries relate to lean mass but do not directly quantify muscle volume.

Determinants of muscle volume include genetics, age, sex, training history, nutrition, and hormonal status. Hypertrophy, the enlargement of existing muscle fibers, is the primary driver of increases in muscle volume during resistance training. Mechanical tension, metabolic stress, and adequate protein and energy intake support hypertrophy, while aging and physical inactivity tend to reduce muscle volume (sarcopenia and disuse atrophy).

Muscle volume correlates with functional capacity. Larger muscle volume generally supports greater force production, but strength also depends on architectural factors such as pennation angle, fascicle length, and neural activation. Thus, volume is an important, but not sole, determinant of performance.

Applications of tracking muscle volume include sports performance, rehabilitation, and clinical assessment. Limitations include the cost and accessibility of imaging and the fact that volume alone does not capture all aspects of muscle quality or function.
