Munasarjakystat, also known as ovarian cysts, are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within the ovary. Most ovarian cysts are benign and cause no symptoms, often disappearing on their own within a few menstrual cycles. They are a common condition, particularly in women of reproductive age.

There are several types of ovarian cysts. Functional cysts, such as follicular cysts and corpus luteum cysts, are the most common and are related to the ovulation process. Other types, like dermoid cysts, cystadenomas, and endometriomas, can also occur. While most are harmless, some cysts can cause symptoms.

Symptoms, when present, can include pelvic pain, bloating, a feeling of fullness in the abdomen, and changes in menstrual cycles. Pain may be more noticeable during intercourse or with bowel movements. In rare cases, a cyst can twist, causing sudden, severe pain (ovarian torsion), or rupture, leading to internal bleeding.

Diagnosis typically involves a pelvic examination and an ultrasound. Further imaging or blood tests may be ordered depending on the suspected type and characteristics of the cyst. Treatment depends on the cyst's size, type, and whether it is causing symptoms. Many small, asymptomatic cysts do not require treatment and are monitored. Larger or symptomatic cysts may be surgically removed.
