Multitasking refers to the performance of more than one task at the same time. It can also mean performing a single task in rapid succession. In computing, multitasking is the ability of an operating system to execute multiple tasks or programs simultaneously. This is achieved by the operating system rapidly switching the central processing unit (CPU) between different tasks, giving the illusion that they are all running at the same time. This switching is so fast that a human user perceives it as simultaneous execution.

Human multitasking, on the other hand, involves an individual attempting to perform multiple tasks at once. This often leads to a decrease in the quality and efficiency of each task compared to focusing on a single task. Studies have shown that human multitasking can result in increased errors, reduced productivity, and higher stress levels. The brain is not truly designed to focus on multiple complex tasks simultaneously; instead, it rapidly switches attention between them.

There are different types of multitasking. Preemptive multitasking allows the operating system to interrupt a running task and allocate CPU time to another task. Cooperative multitasking relies on tasks voluntarily giving up control of the CPU to allow other tasks to run. In human behavior, multitasking can range from simple actions like walking and talking to more complex combinations like driving and using a mobile phone, which is generally discouraged due to safety concerns. The effectiveness of multitasking varies greatly depending on the complexity of the tasks and the individual's cognitive abilities.
