Multislice CT angiography, often abbreviated as MSCT angiography or simply CT angiography (CTA), is a non-invasive medical imaging technique used to visualize arteries and veins throughout the body. It combines the rapid scanning capabilities of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scanners with the intravenous injection of a contrast agent. This contrast material, which is opaque to X-rays, highlights the blood vessels, allowing them to be clearly depicted in detailed cross-sectional images.

The process begins with the administration of an iodinated contrast medium, typically injected into a vein. As the contrast flows through the circulatory system, the patient lies on a table that moves through the gantry of the CT scanner. The MDCT scanner uses multiple rows of X-ray detectors to acquire a large volume of data in a single pass. This data is then processed by a computer to reconstruct high-resolution, three-dimensional images of the blood vessels.

MSCT angiography is a valuable diagnostic tool for a wide range of conditions. It is frequently used to detect aneurysms, dissections, stenoses (narrowing), and occlusions (blockages) in arteries supplying vital organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, and kidneys. It can also be used to assess peripheral arterial disease in the limbs. The detailed anatomical information provided by MSCT angiography helps clinicians in diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring the effectiveness of interventions. It offers a less invasive alternative to conventional angiography in many cases.
