Multimeediumi, often translated as multimedia, refers to the use or integration of multiple forms of media in a single interface or presentation. It combines text, still and moving images, audio, video, animation, and sometimes interactive elements to convey information or provide an experience beyond any single medium.

The concept emerged with the convergence of telecommunications, computing, and media industries. Early multimedia integrated text and simple graphics on dedicated hardware in the 1980s and 1990s with CD-ROMs and interactive kiosks. The rise of the World Wide Web and later mobile devices expanded capabilities through streaming, rich media formats, and web standards such as HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, enabling cross-platform multimedia experiences.

Components and formats include text, bitmap and vector graphics, photographs, sound and music, video, animation, and interactivity (menus, quizzes, hyperlinks). Multimedia can be linear, where content plays in a fixed sequence, or non-linear, offering user-driven navigation and hypermedia links.

Applications cover education and training, entertainment and gaming, advertising and marketing, journalism, museums and heritage sites, and corporate communications. When designed well, multimedia can enhance engagement, comprehension, and retention, while also supporting accessibility via captions, transcripts, and alternate text.

Challenges include bandwidth requirements, device variability, accessibility barriers, and copyright and licensing considerations. Standards and tools continue to evolve, with emphasis on open formats, responsive design, and interoperability across platforms.
