Multilamp refers to a device or system that uses two or more lamps within a single fixture, housing, or assembly. The term is generic and does not denote a specific standard or technology. Multilamp configurations are used to increase light output, provide redundancy, or achieve distribution patterns that a single lamp cannot.

Configurations may vary: lamps can be wired in parallel or arranged in independent modules; some systems separate lamps by optical or spectral properties, such as combining lamps of different color temperatures. In stage lighting and architectural fixtures, multiple small lamps are often combined to approximate a larger light source; in automotive or signage applications, lamp clusters provide directional brightness or resilience.

Applications include stage and architectural lighting, display and signage, automotive headlamps and auxiliary lighting, industrial or UV-curing systems, and horticultural lighting. In many cases, multilamp designs offer continued operation even if one lamp fails, improving reliability.

Advantages include higher total luminous flux, potential for finer control over color and beam shaping, and easier maintenance by replacing individual lamps. Challenges include managing heat output, ensuring color and intensity consistency across lamps, higher upfront cost, and more complex electrical and thermal design.

Design considerations focus on thermal management, electrical wiring schemes, optical coupling, ballast or driver compatibility, and compliance with safety and lighting standards. Regular inspection is important to monitor lamp aging and remaining life to prevent mismatched light output.
