There are several common designs for multiband antennas. One approach is to use multiple resonant elements, each tuned to a different band. These elements can be physically separate but fed by a common point, or they can be integrated into a single structure. Another method involves using specific feedline techniques, like traps or loading coils, to electrically shorten or lengthen the antenna elements, making them resonant on multiple bands. Coaxial cable stubs can also be used to create multiband performance.

The advantage of a multiband antenna is the ability to transmit and receive on various frequencies without needing to switch between different antennas. This saves space, weight, and complexity, especially in mobile or portable setups. However, multiband antennas can sometimes be more complex to design and tune than single-band antennas, and their performance on each band might not be as high as a dedicated single-band antenna. The overall bandwidth and efficiency can also be a compromise.
