Mucosalinfektioihin refers to infections of the mucous membranes, the moist tissues lining body cavities such as the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and genital tracts. These infections are caused by a variety of pathogens including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Common examples are the common cold caused by rhinoviruses, streptococcal pharyngitis, urinary tract infections by Escherichia coli, and vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Typical symptoms depend on the site of infection. Urinary tract infections typically produce dysuria and frequency, and genital fungal infections can lead to itching and discharge. Treatment strategies vary with the etiologic agent. Viral mucosal infections are generally managed with supportive care, whereas bacterial mucosal infections are treated with appropriate antibiotics. Antifungal agents address fungal infections, and antiparasitic drugs are used for parasitic mucosal disease. Prevention relies on good hygiene, vaccination against common viral pathogens, safe sexual practices and appropriate use of antimicrobials to avoid resistance.
