Mucinolytic refers to substances or agents that have the ability to break down mucin. Mucin is a major component of mucus, a viscous secretion produced by epithelial cells lining various body cavities and organs. Mucus plays a protective role, but in certain conditions, it can become excessively thick and tenacious, leading to various health problems.

Mucinolytic agents work by cleaving the glycosidic bonds within mucin molecules, thereby reducing the viscosity and elasticity of mucus. This thinning of mucus makes it easier to clear from the airways, which is particularly beneficial in respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, and pneumonia.
