Motvekter, or counterweights, are masses used to provide balance in mechanical systems. By offsetting the weight of a moving load, they reduce the force needed to lift or hold the load, improve control, and increase safety and energy efficiency. They are typically connected to a pulley, lever, or linkage so that the opposing force matches the load being moved.

Common applications include construction cranes and hoists, where a counterweight system balances the load on the hoist, allowing smaller motors to lift heavier items; elevators, where the counterweight balances the car and reduces motor work; and theatre or stage rigging, where counterweights balance scenery and flown equipment for manual or motorized operation.

Types and design approaches vary. Fixed counterweights are stationary masses attached to the mechanism; movable or adjustable counterweights can be added or removed to balance different loads. Some systems use hydraulic or pneumatic balancing, often referred to as hydraulic counterbalances, to adjust balance without relying solely on gravity. In all cases the counterweight must be properly sized and located to maintain stability and safety.

Design and safety considerations include accurate load estimation, proper matching to pulley geometry, and secure mounting. Systems often require redundancy, locking devices, and regular inspection. Imbalances, misalignment, or inadequate securing can cause jerky motion, excessive wear, or failure.

Maintenance involves periodic checks of weights and attachments for corrosion, cracks, or looseness; ensuring secure anchorage points; keeping weights clean and unobstructed; and testing the system under typical operating conditions to verify proper balance.
