Morfeemes (singular morfeeme) is a term used in some linguistic discussions to denote a hypothesized minimal semantic unit within certain morphology-focused theories. It is described as the smallest element of meaning that can be linked to a distinct phonological realization. In this framework, a word’s overall meaning is built from the combination of several morfeemes, each contributing a discrete semantic feature—such as negation, aspect, or evidentiality—that may be realized through different phonological forms (allomorphs) across languages.

Morfeemes are often discussed in contrast to the traditional concept of morphemes. Proponents argue that focusing on morfeemes can reveal finer-grained semantic distinctions that are otherwise absorbed into larger morphemic units. In practice, a morfeeme is assumed to be manifested in one or more phonological shapes, and its semantic contribution concatenates with other morfeemes to shape the word’s meaning and grammatical behavior.

Within the linguistic literature, morfeemes are not a mainstream or universally accepted category. The term appears in a minority of theoretical discussions and thought experiments, and it has not established widely accepted criteria for delimitation or empirical testing. Critics warn that excessive fragmentation of meaning can complicate analysis and hinder cross-language comparison; proponents see potential for clarifying semantic features in typology or computational modeling.
