Moottorihäviöt refer to energy losses that occur within an electric motor during its operation. These losses reduce the motor's efficiency, meaning that a portion of the electrical energy supplied to the motor is converted into heat rather than mechanical work. Understanding and minimizing these losses is crucial for optimizing motor performance and reducing energy consumption.

The primary categories of moottorihäviöitä include electrical losses, mechanical losses, and core losses. Electrical losses, also known as copper losses, are primarily due to the electrical resistance of the windings. When current flows through the windings, heat is generated according to Joule's law (P = I²R). Mechanical losses encompass friction in the bearings and windage losses caused by the rotation of the motor's rotor through the air. Core losses, or iron losses, occur in the motor's magnetic core. These consist of hysteresis losses, caused by the repeated magnetization and demagnetization of the core material, and eddy current losses, which are circulating currents induced within the core by the changing magnetic field.

The magnitude of these losses depends on various factors, including motor design, operating speed, load, and temperature. For instance, copper losses increase with the square of the load current, while core losses are largely independent of the load but vary with voltage and frequency. Mechanical losses tend to increase with speed. Minimizing moottorihäviöitä can be achieved through proper motor selection, efficient design principles, and maintaining optimal operating conditions. For example, using materials with lower resistance for windings, reducing friction in bearings, and employing laminations in the core to decrease eddy currents are common methods.
