Moottorihäviöt, in Finnish, refers to the energy losses that occur within an electric motor during its operation. These losses are inherent to the functioning of any electric motor and result in a portion of the electrical energy input being converted into forms other than useful mechanical work. Understanding and minimizing these losses is crucial for improving motor efficiency and reducing energy consumption.

The primary categories of moottorihäviöt include stator and rotor copper losses, iron losses, mechanical losses, and stray load losses. Copper losses, also known as Joule losses, arise from the electrical resistance of the windings in both the stator and rotor. As current flows through these conductors, heat is generated, representing energy dissipated. Iron losses, or core losses, occur in the magnetic core of the motor due to hysteresis and eddy currents. Hysteresis loss is caused by the repeated magnetization and demagnetization of the core material, while eddy currents are induced electrical currents within the core itself, both generating heat.

Mechanical losses encompass friction in the bearings and windage losses due to the rotation of the motor's rotor and any associated fan. Stray load losses are more complex and arise from various factors that are difficult to precisely quantify, often related to non-uniform flux distribution and harmonics under load conditions. The sum of these various losses determines the overall efficiency of the electric motor. Engineers strive to reduce moottorihäviöt through material selection, optimized design, and improved manufacturing techniques to enhance the performance and sustainability of electric motors.
