Monokultur refers to the cultivation of a single crop species over a large area, or, in forestry and animal production, the use of a single species or breed in a given stand or system. In agricultural practice, a monoculture focuses on uniform crops, standardized management, and predictable harvests.

In farming, monocultures are common for crops such as wheat, corn, rice, or sugarcane, where field-scale uniformity and mechanization support high yields and efficient processing. They are often linked to intensified farming, reliance on external inputs like fertilizers and pesticides, and centralized supply chains. The global spread of monocultures expanded with industrial agriculture, colonial and post‑colonial agricultural systems, and the Green Revolution, contributing to higher production but increasing dependence on inputs and market conditions.

Ecological and sustainability concerns accompany monocultures. They typically reduce biodiversity and the range of ecosystem services, such as pollination and natural pest control. Soil health can decline due to repetitive cropping and nutrient depletion, and a single crop increases vulnerability to pests, diseases, and climate-related stress. A severe outbreak or extreme weather can lead to substantial losses and economic risk for farmers.

In forestry and horticulture, monocultures are plantations of a single tree or crop species. While efficient for timber or standardized crops, they can be more prone to pests and drought and offer limited habitat diversity. Many agricultural systems now integrate alternatives—crop rotation, intercropping, agroforestry, and polycultures—to maintain yields while preserving soil health, resilience, and biodiversity.
