Moniatoms is a hypothetical concept that refers to atoms composed of a single type of elementary particle. This term is generally used in theoretical physics and cosmology to describe certain early universe scenarios or exotic matter candidates. The idea is not that a single atom is made of only one electron or one proton, but rather that an atom could theoretically exist where all its constituent particles were identical, for instance, a hydrogen atom where the proton and electron were indistinguishable from each other.

In standard atomic theory, atoms are composed of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, and electrons orbiting the nucleus. Protons and electrons are fundamentally different types of particles with distinct properties, such as charge and mass. Neutrons are also distinct. The concept of moniatoms challenges this fundamental structure by suggesting a hypothetical scenario where this distinction is blurred or non-existent at the most basic level of atomic formation.

Moniatoms are not observed in nature and are not part of the current Standard Model of particle physics. Their discussion typically arises in speculative contexts, such as exploring the potential states of matter in the extreme conditions of the very early universe, shortly after the Big Bang. At such high energies and densities, known particles might have behaved in ways that are not readily observable today, potentially leading to such exotic configurations. The term is also sometimes used in discussions of certain types of dark matter candidates, although these remain speculative.
