Molecules are the smallest units of chemical compounds that retain the characteristic properties of the substance. They are composed of two or more atoms that remain bonded together by covalent, ionic, or metallic interactions. The arrangement of atoms within a molecule, known as its molecular geometry, determines its chemical behavior, polarity, reactivity, and physical properties such as boiling and melting points. In living systems, molecules play essential roles in metabolism, structural support, and information storage. The most common molecular types include organic molecules, which contain carbon and hydrogen, as well as heteroatoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur; inorganic molecules such as water, ammonia, and simple salts; and large macromolecules like proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids.
Molecular classification begins with simple diatomic species such as O₂ and N₂, moving to polyatomic gases,
