A mockdocumentary, commonly called a mockumentary or mock documentary, is a film or television program that imitates the documentary form to present fictional content. It adopts documentary conventions such as talking-head interviews, observational footage, voiceover narration, on-location shooting, and sometimes archival material in order to create the appearance of real events.

The primary aim of a mockdocumentary is often satirical or parodic, using the guise of factual presentation to critique, illuminate, or simply entertain. By presenting invented people and situations as if they were genuine, it can highlight absurdities in institutions, media, or everyday life, while inviting audience interpretation and humor. The technique relies on the audience’s recognition of documentary tropes and can employ improvisation, stylized performance, and controlled ambiguity about what is “real.”

Historically, the format gained prominence in late 20th-century cinema and television. A landmark feature is This Is Spinal Tap (1984), which popularized the concept of a faux rock documentary. In television, The Office (UK, 2001) helped establish the mockumentary as a mainstream narrative device, a style later adopted by series such as Parks and Recreation and several other contemporary comedies. The approach has also appeared in straight fiction and horror, with films that use a documentary frame to heighten realism or suspense.

Notable examples span a range of tones, from satire and parody to horror and drama. Critics often praise mockdocumentaries for their inventive blending of fiction and perceived reality, but some critique the format for potentially deceiving audiences or for ethical concerns when real people or sensitive subjects are involved.
