Mistletoe is the common name for several species of hemi-parasitic evergreen plants that grow on trees and shrubs. The best known is European mistletoe (Viscum album); other examples include Phoradendron species in the Americas and Viscum species in other regions. Mistletoe attaches to host branches with a specialized organ called a haustorium, from which it extracts water and minerals while performing photosynthesis for sugars.

Morphology and reproduction: Mistletoes are typically evergreen shrubs with leathery leaves and clusters of white to yellowish berries. Many species are dioecious, requiring separate male and female plants for fruit production. Birds disperse the seeds by consuming the berries and depositing them on branches. The seed germinates and forms a haustorium that penetrates the host’s bark to draw resources.

Distribution and ecology: Mistletoes occur in temperate and tropical regions, attaching to a wide range of trees and shrubs. They can influence host growth and nutrient balance, but many birds rely on mistletoe as a food source, and mistletoe can provide nesting sites for some species, contributing to local biodiversity and ecosystem structure.

Cultural significance and safety: In many European cultures, mistletoe is associated with winter festivities and is hung as a decoration, linked to kissing traditions and symbolism of peace. Mistletoe berries and other parts are toxic to humans if ingested; handling generally poses little risk, but ingestion by children or pets should be avoided. Some mistletoe extracts have been studied in medicine, though their use remains limited and carefully regulated.
