In finance, it can lead to incorrect pricing or budgeting. In science, miscalculations may yield faulty models or unsupported conclusions, delaying progress.

Prevention and mitigation emphasize verification and transparency. Practices include independent cross-checks, dimensional analysis, reproducible calculations, and thorough documentation. Additional strategies are error propagation analysis, sensitivity analysis, peer review, and robust software testing and auditing to catch mistakes before they propagate.
