The output is usually an environmental assessment report or an environmental impact assessment document, sometimes referred to as a miljørapport in Danish practice, as part of the planning process or permitting.

Miljøudredninger are often carried out by environmental consulting firms on behalf of developers, landowners, or municipality authorities. They are typically required or advised when a project may affect sensitive resources or when national or EU regulations mandate an environmental impact assessment. They may also be used in due diligence during property transactions to document environmental conditions and potential liabilities. The quality of a miljøudredning depends on the breadth of data, use of validated methods, and transparency of uncertainties.
