Miljøudredninger

Miljøudredninger are studies conducted to identify and evaluate environmental conditions and potential impacts associated with a proposed project, operation, or existing site. They are used to support planning decisions, assess risks to health and the environment, and propose mitigation measures.

The scope typically includes soil and groundwater contamination, surface water and groundwater quality, air quality and noise, biodiversity, cultural heritage, waste management, chemicals, and climate-related aspects. They may also assess social and economic implications of environmental changes.

The process generally involves scoping to define issues and boundaries; data collection from field surveys, existing records, and measurements; risk assessment and impact analysis; identification of mitigation measures and alternatives; preparation of a structured report; consultation with authorities and stakeholders; and follow-up monitoring or conditions in approvals. The output is usually an environmental assessment report or an environmental impact assessment document, sometimes referred to as a miljørapport in Danish practice, as part of the planning process or permitting.

Miljøudredninger are often carried out by environmental consulting firms on behalf of developers, landowners, or municipality authorities. They are typically required or advised when a project may affect sensitive resources or when national or EU regulations mandate an environmental impact assessment. They may also be used in due diligence during property transactions to document environmental conditions and potential liabilities. The quality of a miljøudredning depends on the breadth of data, use of validated methods, and transparency of uncertainties.
