Milieu modeling, also referred to as milieu-based modeling, is an interdisciplinary approach that uses computational models to represent and analyze the social and physical environments (milieus) in which individuals and groups interact. It seeks to capture how contextual factors such as culture, institutions, geography, and resource availability influence behavior, decision making, and system dynamics.

By combining sociological and ecological theory with simulation methods, milieu modeling aims to reveal how changes in the surrounding milieu propagate through a system, producing emergent patterns that are not evident from studying individuals in isolation. It emphasizes the interaction between agents and their settings and often focuses on how local contexts scale up to affect overall outcomes.

Common methods include agent-based modeling, system dynamics, and network analysis, often implemented in a spatially explicit framework. Modelers may integrate GIS data, census or survey information, and environmental datasets. Calibration and validation typically involve historical data, scenario testing, and sensitivity analyses.

Applications span urban planning, public health, environmental management, climate adaptation, transportation, and education. Milieu models can support policy analysis by exploring how shifts in policy, infrastructure, or social norms alter outcomes such as mobility, disease transmission, or resource use within a milieu.

Data and validation challenges include limited data on contextual factors, scale mismatches between agents and environments, and difficulties in measuring emergent properties. Ethical considerations, transparency, and documentation are important to ensure credibility and reproducibility.
