Mikrokrediittiä, often translated as microcredit, refers to the provision of very small loans to individuals or groups who typically lack access to traditional banking services. These loans are often intended to help recipients start or expand small businesses, thereby fostering economic self-sufficiency and alleviating poverty. The concept gained significant traction with the work of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Microcredit differs from conventional loans in several key aspects. The loan amounts are significantly smaller, often ranging from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. The target demographic usually consists of low-income individuals, women, and those in rural or marginalized communities. Repayment schedules are often more flexible, and interest rates, while sometimes higher than traditional bank loans due to administrative costs and risk, are generally structured to be manageable for borrowers.

The underlying philosophy of microcredit is to empower individuals by providing them with the financial tools to improve their livelihoods. It is not simply about lending money but about fostering entrepreneurship, building social capital through group lending models, and promoting economic development from the grassroots level. While microcredit has been credited with significant success in poverty reduction and empowering marginalized populations, it has also faced criticism regarding high interest rates, potential for over-indebtedness, and the actual impact on poverty alleviation in some contexts. Nevertheless, it remains a widely recognized tool in development economics.
