Alleviation is the act or process of alleviating something—making it less severe, burdensome, or harmful. The noun derives from Middle French allevier (to lighten) from Latin levare 'to lift' with the prefix ad- meaning 'toward'. In common usage, alleviation refers to relief or mitigation rather than elimination.

In medicine and health care, alleviation describes the reduction of symptoms or suffering. Analgesia, antipyretics, and palliation aim at alleviating pain, fever, or distress. In chronic illness, palliative care emphasizes alleviation of burdens associated with illness rather than cure.
