Mikologists, or mycologists, are scientists who study fungi, a diverse kingdom that includes yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. They investigate fungal taxonomy, life cycles, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, and ecological roles, as well as interactions with plants, animals, and humans. Many work in universities, museums, hospitals, farms, or industry, applying their knowledge to agriculture, medicine, food production, and environmental management.

The term derives from Greek mykes for fungus and logos for study. In English the standard spelling is mycologist, though transliterations such as mikologist appear in some languages or contexts.

Systematic study of fungi began in the 18th century with Pier Antonio Micheli, who described fungi and observed their spores. In the 19th century Elias Magnus Fries established a formal classification system, while Anton de Bary helped illuminate the role of fungi in plant disease. The 20th century saw advances in medical mycology and industrial applications, and modern genetics and genomics have transformed taxonomy and functional understanding.

Subfields include medical mycology, which examines fungal infections in humans and animals; plant pathology, which studies crop diseases; industrial or applied mycology, which explores fermentation, enzyme production, and biotechnology; ecological mycology, which investigates decomposition, symbioses such as mycorrhizae, and fungal diversity; and efforts in conservation and bioremediation that leverage fungal capabilities.

Notable figures in the field include Pier Antonio Micheli, Elias Magnus Fries, and Pietro Saccardo, among others. Beatrix Potter is often cited as an amateur contributor, and contemporary figures such as Paul Stamets and David Hibbett have helped raise public interest in fungal science. Mikologists play a central role in understanding biodiversity, disease, and sustainable use of fungal resources.
