Microfloppy is a term that can refer to several smaller-than-standard floppy disk formats that emerged throughout the history of magnetic disk storage. While the most common floppy disk was the 5.25-inch and later the 3.5-inch, the "microfloppy" label was often applied to even more compact designs or specific proprietary implementations.

One early example of a microfloppy was the 2-inch floppy disk, introduced by Hitachi in the early 1980s. This format was notable for its small size, intended for use in portable devices and early portable computers. Another format sometimes referred to as a microfloppy was the 3-inch floppy disk, a standard developed by Matsushita (Panasonic) and others. This 3-inch format saw some adoption in consumer electronics and early personal computers, particularly in Europe.

The term could also be used more generically to describe variations on existing floppy disk sizes that were physically smaller, perhaps with higher density. However, none of these microfloppy formats achieved the widespread success or longevity of the 3.5-inch floppy disk, which eventually became the dominant standard before being largely replaced by optical media and flash storage. The concept of microfloppies reflects the ongoing drive for miniaturization in computing hardware.
