Microelectronvoltscale is an informal term used in physics to describe energy phenomena that lie in the microelectronvolt range (μeV). One microelectronvolt equals 10^-6 eV. In temperature units, this corresponds to roughly 0.0116 kelvin, since k_B T ≈ 8.617e-5 eV/K. The μeV scale is therefore characteristic of cryogenic experiments and nanoscale quantum systems where very small energy differences govern behavior.

This scale is significant for describing small energy splittings, weak couplings, and low-energy excitations in mesoscopic and quantum devices. It is commonly employed to characterize transition energies in superconducting qubits, energy gaps in low-energy excitations, and level spacings in quantum dots or nanomechanical systems. For example, superconducting qubit transition energies often fall in the few to tens of μeV range, corresponding to gigahertz-range frequencies via E = h f. Zeeman splittings of electron spins under modest magnetic fields and hyperfine interactions can also reside on the μeV scale, depending on material parameters and applied fields.

Measurements at μeV energies typically require millikelvin to kelvin-range cryogenic techniques and specialized spectroscopic methods, such as microwave spectroscopy or tunneling spectroscopy. The microelectronvolt scale sits between the nanoelectronvolt and millielectronvolt scales, forming part of a broader hierarchy of energy scales used to understand electronic, spin, and phonon phenomena in nanoscale systems. The term emphasizes relative energy magnitudes rather than a formal SI unit.
