A mezzanine floor, often referred to as a mezzanine walkway or simply a mezzanine, is an intermediate floor in a building which is created by laying a second floor between the floor and the ceiling of a building. This creates a partial floor that is open to the main floor below, effectively increasing the usable space within the building without the need for a full-sized additional story. Mezzanines are commonly found in warehouses, industrial facilities, and retail spaces, though they can also be incorporated into residential lofts and office buildings.

The primary function of a mezzanine is to maximize vertical space. In industrial settings, they are frequently used for storage, creating additional shelving or platform areas for inventory. In retail environments, mezzanines can house additional merchandise, fitting rooms, or even a small cafe. For offices, they might provide extra workspace or meeting areas. The construction of a mezzanine typically involves steel or timber framing and can be designed to be a permanent fixture or a modular, demountable system.

Mezzanines are distinguished from full-story additions by their partial nature and the fact that they do not typically occupy the entire footprint of the building. They allow for airflow and light to pass through to the lower level, maintaining a sense of openness. Safety features such as railings, staircases, and sometimes elevators are essential components of mezzanine design to ensure safe access and egress. The cost-effectiveness of a mezzanine compared to constructing a new building or a full extension is a significant factor in their widespread adoption.
