metriikat

Metriikat is a Finnish term that translates roughly to metrics in English. In general usage, metriikat refer to quantitative measures used to evaluate and compare properties of systems, processes, or data. The term is used across disciplines, including mathematics, statistics, data science, and metrology, to describe both abstract notions of distance and concrete performance indicators.

In mathematics, metriikka denotes the study of distance and similarity. A metric is a function d defined on a set X that assigns a nonnegative real number to each pair of elements and satisfies identity of indiscernibles, symmetry, and the triangle inequality. Collectively, these functions give rise to metric spaces, which provide a framework for convergence, continuity, and geometric reasoning. Classic examples include the Euclidean metric, the Manhattan (taxicab) metric, and the Chebyshev metric.

In data analysis and machine learning, metriikat often refer to evaluation and error measures used to assess models or predictions. Typical example metrics include accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and ROC-AUC for classification, and mean absolute error (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), and R-squared for regression. The choice of metric influences model selection and training objectives, and different metrics react differently to class imbalance, scale, and outliers.

Metriikat also appear in metrology and quality assurance as standardized indicators of measurement capability, instrument performance, and process quality, linking numerical data to real-world quality requirements.
