Metatextually is an adverb describing actions, commentary, or analysis that treat a text as a text—emphasizing its status as a constructed artifact, its production, or its relationship to other works. It derives from metatextual, referring to metatextuality, the quality of self-awareness about textuality in critique or creation.

In literary and cultural theory, metatextuality refers to devices and practices that foreground the act of storytelling itself. Common metatextual techniques include metafictional narration, self-reflexive commentary, direct address to the reader, and paratextual elements such as prefaces, footnotes, or margin notes that draw attention to the text’s artificiality or framing. These approaches often aim to question authorship, authority, or the boundaries between fiction and reality.

Metatextual analysis is used to examine how a work participates in intertextual networks, how it negotiates readers’ expectations, and how meaning is produced through awareness of texthood. It is distinct from purely in-universe storytelling, which operates without acknowledging its fictional status. Metatextuality can coexist with intertextuality and, in some cases, with broader media commentary or self-referential humor.

Notable examples in fiction commonly cited for metatextuality include Italo Calvino’s If on a winter’s night a traveler and Vladimir Nabokov’s Pale Fire, both of which foreground the act of reading and writing. In contemporary media, metatextual devices appear in films, TV, and digital media that acknowledge their own production or invite audiences to reflect on interpretation itself.
