Metasystem is a concept in systems theory describing a system that coordinates, integrates, and regulates a set of lower-level subsystems to achieve higher-order organization and goals. Valentin Turchin popularized the idea of metasystem transitions (MSTs), describing them as evolutionary leaps in which a new metasystem emerges to coordinate already existing subsystems. An MST introduces a new organizing logic, communication structure, and hierarchical layering that enable greater complexity and adaptability. In this view, major advances in biology, society, and technology are driven by successive metasystem transitions that reconcile incompatibilities among subsystems.
