mestertanítvány
A mestertanítvány, often translated as master-apprentice or journeyman, is a historical and sometimes contemporary concept in vocational training and crafts. This relationship involves an experienced master craftsman who takes on a less experienced individual, the apprentice or tanítvány, to impart their skills and knowledge. The apprenticeship typically involves a period of learning by doing, where the apprentice gradually takes on more responsibility under the master's supervision. Historically, this system was the primary method of transmitting specialized trades and artistic techniques from one generation to the next. The apprentice would live and work with the master, often for several years, learning not only the technical aspects of the craft but also the business practices and ethical considerations associated with it. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, the tanítvány might become a journeyman, capable of working independently but perhaps not yet possessing the full expertise or reputation of a master. Further experience and the creation of a masterpiece (mestermunka) could then lead to achieving master status. While formalized guild systems have largely diminished, elements of the master-apprentice model persist in various forms of vocational education and mentorship programs globally.
