Mesoteliomasille, often referred to as mesothelioma in English, is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that originates in the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a thin membrane that lines the chest cavity (pleura), abdominal cavity (peritoneum), and the sac surrounding the heart (pericardium). The vast majority of mesothelioma cases are linked to exposure to asbestos fibers. When inhaled or ingested, asbestos fibers can lodge in the mesothelium and cause inflammation and genetic damage over many years, leading to the development of cancer.
