Mesoteliomasille, often referred to as mesothelioma in English, is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that originates in the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a thin membrane that lines the chest cavity (pleura), abdominal cavity (peritoneum), and the sac surrounding the heart (pericardium). The vast majority of mesothelioma cases are linked to exposure to asbestos fibers. When inhaled or ingested, asbestos fibers can lodge in the mesothelium and cause inflammation and genetic damage over many years, leading to the development of cancer.

The latency period between asbestos exposure and the development of mesothelioma is typically very long, often 20 to 50 years or more. This means that individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma were likely exposed to asbestos decades earlier, often in occupational settings such as construction, shipbuilding, insulation work, or mining. Symptoms can vary depending on the location of the tumor but commonly include shortness of breath, chest pain, abdominal swelling, and unexplained weight loss. Diagnosis often involves imaging tests like CT scans or MRIs, followed by a biopsy to confirm the presence of cancerous mesothelial cells. Treatment options are limited and depend on the stage and location of the cancer, and may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Prognosis is generally poor due to the aggressive nature of the disease and the challenges in early detection and effective treatment.
