Mesoteliitti is a rare and aggressive cancer that affects the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers many of the body's internal organs, including the lungs, heart, and abdomen. The most common form of mesoteliitti affects the pleura, the membrane lining the lungs and chest cavity. Other forms can affect the peritoneum (lining of the abdomen) or the pericardium (lining around the heart).

The primary known cause of mesoteliitti is exposure to asbestos fibers. When inhaled or ingested, these fibers can become embedded in the mesothelium, leading to chronic inflammation and genetic damage that can eventually result in cancer. This exposure often occurs in occupational settings such as construction, shipbuilding, and mining, though it can also happen through environmental exposure. The latency period between asbestos exposure and the development of mesoteliitti can be very long, often 20 to 50 years or more.

Symptoms of mesoteliitti vary depending on the location of the cancer. Pleural mesoteliitti can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent cough, and unexplained weight loss. Peritoneal mesoteliitti may lead to abdominal pain, swelling, nausea, and changes in bowel habits. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like CT scans or MRIs, followed by a biopsy to confirm the presence of cancerous cells.

Treatment options for mesoteliitti are limited and depend on the stage and extent of the disease. They may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, often used in combination. Due to its aggressive nature and late diagnosis, mesoteliitti has a generally poor prognosis. Research is ongoing to find more effective treatments and improve patient outcomes.
