Mesoteliaalista is a Finnish term that translates to "mesothelioma" in English. Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer that affects the mesothelium, a thin layer of tissue that lines the internal organs and body cavities. The most common type of mesothelioma affects the pleura, the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, and is known as pleural mesothelioma. Other types include peritoneal mesothelioma (lining of the abdomen), pericardial mesothelioma (lining of the heart), and mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis (lining of the testes).

The primary cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Asbestos fibers, when inhaled or ingested, can become lodged in the mesothelium, causing chronic inflammation and damage that can lead to cancer over a long latency period, often decades after exposure. Other less common causes or risk factors may include exposure to certain other mineral fibers and potentially some viral infections, though asbestos remains the most significant known cause.

Symptoms of mesothelioma can vary depending on the location of the tumor. For pleural mesothelioma, common symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. Peritoneal mesothelioma may cause abdominal pain, swelling, nausea, and changes in bowel habits. Diagnosis typically involves medical imaging (such as CT scans or MRIs), blood tests, and a biopsy to confirm the presence of cancerous cells.

Treatment options for mesothelioma are often challenging due to the aggressive nature of the disease and its late diagnosis. Treatment may involve a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, depending on the stage and extent of the cancer. In some cases, immunotherapy is also used. Prognosis for mesothelioma is generally poor, but survival rates can vary. Prevention focuses on avoiding asbestos exposure through strict regulations in workplaces and demolition sites.
