Meridiach is a fictional coastal city-state in the world-building setting of Eldoria. Located on a crescent peninsula and protected by a line of sea walls, it controls a cluster of nearby islets that form a natural harbor and commercial hub. The name is thought to derive from the Meridian trade routes that pass through the harbor, linking inland markets with sea-going caravans.

History and governance: Meridiach emerged in the early second millennium as a federation of merchant guilds that settled along the peninsula. It developed fortifications after several pirate raids and established a governance system that combines guild representation with popular assemblies. The magistrate, elected for a fixed term, acts as head of government, while the guild council and the People’s Assembly share legislative power.

Economy and society: The port handles cargo, shipbuilding, and repair, supported by a robust glassmaking and textile industry. Exports include textiles, amphoras, timber, and metal goods. The population is a mélange of sailors, artisans, merchants, and smallholders, with a multilingual mercantile culture and traditions of public storytelling and seasonal markets.

Culture and landmarks: Notable sites include the Grand Harbor, the Blue Gate, and the Archives of Meridiach, a major repository of maritime laws and historical manuscripts. Educational institutions include a maritime academy and the city archive. The climate is temperate maritime, with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers.
