Merevlemezmeghajtók, often referred to as hard disk drives (HDDs), are non-volatile storage devices that store and retrieve digital data using magnetic storage. They consist of one or more rigid, rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material. Data is read and written by read/write heads that float a microscopic distance above the platters. The platters spin at high speeds, typically between 5,400 and 15,000 revolutions per minute (RPM), allowing the read/write heads to access any part of the disk relatively quickly.

The data is organized into tracks and sectors on each platter. A track is a circular path, and a sector is a subdivision of a track. When the computer needs to access data, the read/write heads move to the correct track and wait for the desired sector to rotate beneath them. The speed at which the platters rotate and the time it takes for the heads to move across the platters (seek time) are key factors in a hard drive's performance.
