Merevedése refers to the physiological process in males where the penis becomes engorged with blood, causing it to stiffen and enlarge. This phenomenon is a crucial component of sexual arousal and is essential for sexual intercourse.

The process is initiated by psychological or physical stimuli that trigger nerve signals from the brain and local nerves to the penis. These signals cause the smooth muscles in the penile arteries to relax, allowing more blood to flow into the corpora cavernosa, the two sponge-like chambers within the penis. Simultaneously, the veins that normally drain blood from the penis are compressed, trapping the blood within the corpora cavernosa and maintaining the erection.

Several factors can influence merevedése. Hormones, particularly testosterone, play a significant role in sexual desire and function.
