mentalmodeling
Mental modeling refers to the cognitive process of constructing internal representations of external reality in order to reason, plan, and predict outcomes. A mental model is the simplified, internal model of how a system works, including its components, relationships, and rules. People use mental models to interpret information, make decisions, solve problems, and anticipate consequences. They are built from experience, education, cultural context, and feedback, and are often domain-specific.
Mental models can be accurate enough to support effective action, but they are inherently partial and biased.
Common examples include a driver’s mental model of a car’s acceleration, a scientist’s model of a chemical
Techniques to improve mental modeling include using checklists, creating explicit diagrams or concept maps, running simulations,
