Meniscusschade refers to damage to the meniscus, which are C-shaped pieces of cartilage found in the knee joint. There are two menisci in each knee: the medial meniscus on the inner side and the lateral meniscus on the outer side. These menisci act as shock absorbers between the thighbone (femur) and the shinbone (tibia), helping to distribute weight and stabilize the knee.

Damage can occur acutely due to a sudden twisting or impact injury, often during sports or falls. This can result in a tear, which can be a simple crack, a complex tear, or a flap tear. Degenerative changes, which are common with aging and overuse, can also weaken the meniscus, making it more susceptible to tearing even with minor movements.

Symptoms of meniscal damage can vary but commonly include pain in the knee, especially with twisting or squatting, swelling, stiffness, and a feeling of clicking, popping, or locking in the joint. Sometimes, a piece of torn meniscus can get caught in the joint, causing it to lock up.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and medical history, often followed by imaging tests such as an MRI, which can clearly visualize the meniscus and the extent of any damage. Treatment options depend on the type, location, and severity of the tear, as well as the patient's age and activity level. Conservative management may include rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), pain medication, and physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles. For more significant tears or those causing persistent symptoms, surgical intervention, such as arthroscopic repair or removal of the damaged portion of the meniscus (meniscectomy), may be considered.
