Memoriets (singular memoriet) is a term used in speculative discussions of memory representation to denote a discrete, minimally meaningful unit of memory. In theoretical models, memoriets are envisioned as the building blocks for episodic and semantic memory, analogous to bits in computing but adapted to the reconstructive and context-dependent nature of human memory. The word combines a root related to mémoire or memory with a diminutive suffix to signal a small unit.

In cognitive science, memoriets are treated as abstract constructs rather than directly observable entities. Researchers model memory as a collection of memoriets that can be encoded, stored, and retrieved, with varying precision, association strength, and context binding. Retrieval operates through probabilistic links among memoriets, producing recollections that are often reconstructive rather than exact replicas of past events.

In neuromorphic and brain–computer interface research, memoriets appear as a conceptual bridge between neural activity and symbolic representation. Some proposals describe encoding schemes where neural populations populate memoriets, enabling modular storage and transfer of information within artificial or hybrid systems.

Historically, memoriet as a term has appeared mainly in theoretical discussions and speculative writings about memory architecture. It is not an established unit of measurement in psychology or neuroscience, and no standard method exists to quantify memoriets across individuals or platforms.

Criticism notes that adopting memoriets as a quantity risks oversimplifying the distributed, dynamic nature of memory and may conflate storage with retrieval processes. Proponents argue that the concept helps formalize ideas about memory organization and retrieval strategies.
