Meibomiai refers to inflammation of the meibomian glands. These are specialized oil glands located within the eyelids that produce the lipid layer of the tear film. This lipid layer is crucial for preventing rapid evaporation of the watery component of tears, thereby maintaining ocular surface health and providing clear vision.

When meibomian glands become inflamed or their function is impaired, it is known as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This condition is a leading cause of evaporative dry eye disease. Symptoms of meibomiai can include redness and irritation of the eyelids, gritty or sandy sensation in the eyes, blurred vision that improves with blinking, light sensitivity, and a feeling of dryness.

The exact causes of meibomiai are not fully understood, but several factors are believed to contribute. These include aging, hormonal changes, certain skin conditions like rosacea and acne, and prolonged use of digital devices, which can reduce blink rate and lead to incomplete eyelid closure. Blockage of the gland orifices by thickened or altered secretions can also play a role.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination of the eyelids and ocular surface, often with specialized lighting and magnification. Doctors may assess the quality and quantity of meibomian gland secretions, look for signs of inflammation or blockage, and evaluate the tear film. Treatment aims to relieve symptoms and improve gland function. Common strategies include warm compresses applied to the eyelids to help melt solidified secretions, lid hygiene with gentle cleansing, and sometimes topical or oral medications to reduce inflammation or treat underlying conditions.
