Mehrschalig (multilayer) is an attribute describing a construction, material, or system that consists of several layers stacked on top of one another. The concept is used across engineering and science to achieve properties that single-layer designs cannot provide, such as enhanced insulation, barrier protection, or selective optical behavior.

In building technology, mehrschalige components include walls, façades, and glazing systems with multiple layers of different materials (for example outer cladding, air or insulation layer, and inner lining). In electronics and packaging, mehrschichtige Systeme include multilayer printed circuit boards with several copper layers separated by dielectric laminates, as well as multilayer barrier films used in food or pharmaceutical packaging.

Advantages of mehrschalig design include reduced heat loss, improved acoustic isolation, customizable optical properties, and enhanced barrier performance. Drawbacks can include higher production costs, increased thickness, and risks of delamination between layers under stress.
