Megporzást, commonly translated as pollination, is a crucial biological process that enables fertilization in flowering plants. It is the transfer of pollen from the male part of a flower, the anther, to the female part, the stigma. This transfer is essential for the plant to produce seeds and fruits, thus ensuring the continuation of its species.

Pollination can occur through various agents. Many plants rely on abiotic factors like wind (anemophily) or water (hydrophily). Wind pollination is common in grasses, conifers, and many deciduous trees, where pollen is light and abundant, carried passively by air currents. Water pollination is less common and is typically seen in aquatic plants.

More frequently, pollination is facilitated by biotic agents, collectively known as pollinators. Insects, particularly bees, butterflies, and moths, are the most significant insect pollinators. Birds, such as hummingbirds, and mammals, including bats and some rodents, also play important roles in pollinating specific plant species. These pollinators are often attracted to flowers by visual cues like bright colors and enticing scents, and by rewards like nectar and pollen.

The act of pollination leads to fertilization, where the male gamete from the pollen grain fuses with the female gamete within the ovule. This fusion initiates the development of a seed, which contains the embryo of a new plant and a food supply. The surrounding ovary of the flower then typically develops into a fruit, which often aids in seed dispersal. Without successful pollination and subsequent fertilization, many plants would be unable to reproduce, impacting ecosystems and agricultural production.
