Megajäristys is a term used to describe earthquakes of exceptional magnitude. While there is no universally agreed-upon definition for a megajäristys, it generally refers to earthquakes that are significantly larger than typical seismic events, often exceeding magnitude 9.0 on the moment magnitude scale. These events are exceptionally rare, occurring only a few times in recorded history.

Megajäristykset typically occur at convergent plate boundaries, specifically along subduction zones where one tectonic plate slides beneath another. The immense stress that builds up over long periods in these zones is released in a single, catastrophic event. The rupture zone of a megajäristys can extend for hundreds or even thousands of kilometers along the fault line.

The most well-known consequence of megajäristykset is the generation of massive tsunamis. The sudden vertical displacement of the seafloor during the earthquake can displace enormous volumes of water, creating waves that can travel across entire oceans and cause widespread devastation far from the earthquake's epicenter. Beyond tsunamis, megajäristykset can cause severe ground shaking, landslides, liquefaction of soil, and significant damage to infrastructure over vast areas. Examples include the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Due to their rarity and immense destructive potential, megajäristykset are a major focus of geological research and disaster preparedness efforts.
